Waimea (Kamuela) is inland about 20 miles from Kawaihae. It is the home of the largest privately owned ranch in the United States, Parker Ranch. Waimea is a wonderful little town. It is extremely diverse: from rough, tough paniolos (cowboys) to quiet intellectuals. The observatory on Mauna Kea has its office in Waimea. All of the information from its telescopes is electronically relayed to this office. The climate is wet and cool. Take a sweater. The Parker Ranch Museum is worth seeing. There are several good restaurants and the newest hospital on the island is in Waimea. |
