Restaurants and Shopping

Kailua Village (approximately 3 miles north of Alii Hale)

There are many wonderful restaurants and places to shop on the Big Island.  There are far too many to name here.  The owners of Alii Hale have tried most of them.  Generally, the price does not necessarily correlate with the best food and service.

The owners of Alii Hale's favorite restaurant for breakfast is Jolly Rogers on Alii Drive in Kailua.  The food is good and reasonably priced.  This restaurant is ocean front and the early morning view is fantastic.

Their favorite restaurant for lunch is Basil's on Alii Drive in Kailua.  The food is great and the price is reasonable.  It is almost across the street from the Hulihe'e Palace.  One of the Owners does not even like Italian food, but he likes Basil's.  The garlic bread is unsurpassed.  You can watch the boats come into the Kailua Pier as you eat.  For dessert, try shave ice at the ice cream/shave ice place a few doors to the north.  This is Kona at its best.

There are many unique little shops along the waterfront, in the outdoor shopping centers, and in the light industrial areas in Kailua.  There are also major chain stores such as Costco, Walmart, K Mart and Safeway.

Keauhou is approximately 3 miles south of Alii Hale on Alii Drive

On the way to Keauhou is the Owners"  favorite restaurant for dinner, Jameson's by the Sea, which is oceanfront on Alii Drive next to Magic Sands Beach.  It is expensive but very good.  The atmosphere is outstanding.  Lunch is less expensive but the atmosphere is not as good.

At Keauhou there is a shopping center with several interesting shops, the famous Drysdale's sports bar and restaurant, a supermarket, Longs Drugs Store and an 8 screen movie theater complex.
